Stoneware combined with porcelain

Stoneware and porcelain are two different materials with their own character, color, transparency and shrinkage. I once saw Akira Matsumoto, a Japanese ceramicist, combine the materials porcelain and stoneware in a hand-shaped bowl. This was such a revelation to me that I started researching this technique in my studio. Since my love lies in turning, I started experimenting with turning stoneware and porcelain in/onto each other.
This voyage of discovery gave rise to the ‘Longing for the sea’ series, followed by ‘Iceland blues’ inspired by cycling trips through Iceland.

Technique and method

It is a challenge to twist the two materials together.
I always compare this to combining peanut butter and cottage cheese. I chose the cylinder as the shape because all deviations and problems become super visible in it, and it is not possible to disguise anything. Multiple layers are centered on top of each other. By guiding the transitions well, by directing the pulling up of the clay in a certain way, the materials are gradually twisted together. Adding color (pigments) to the clay, enables me to create colorful spatial and empty landscapes.
